Direct cremation is a cremation without a funeral ceremony or mourners attending the crematorium. It gives you the freedom to remember your loved one privately, or arrange a separate gathering when you feel ready.

How is it organised?

Their team will discuss collection and care of your loved one, explain the arrangements, help with the necessary paperwork and provide a written estimate. They organise the cremation and agree with you how the ashes will be returned.

What will you need?

You will be asked for your loved one’s personal details, their current location and the contact details of the person arranging the cremation. The funeral provider will guide you through death registration and the required authorisations.

For a death and cremation in England or Wales, this normally includes a signed cremation application and the registrar’s certificate for burial or cremation, or the relevant coroner’s paperwork. You should also tell the provider about any pacemaker or other implanted medical device.

You will need to confirm your wishes for the ashes and agree the costs. The provider’s terms require full payment before a fixed-cost direct funeral.
