Our Story
Lumi Place started in 2023 in the heart of New Ferry.
After the explosion in 2017, our town went through a very difficult time. Shops were damaged, businesses closed, and many people struggled. Years later, some families were still finding it hard to cope, especially with rising food and living costs.
We began with one simple idea: save good surplus food and give it to people who need it. What started as a small volunteer project quickly became our weekly Sunday free food event. Every week we share fresh fruit, vegetables, bread and other essentials in a friendly, welcoming space where no one is judged.
As time went on, more and more people came. We grew much bigger than we ever expected. With that growth came bigger costs — transport, storage, electricity and other bills that make the Sunday food support possible.
To make sure the free food can continue long term, we opened the Lumi Place Community Shop.
The shop sells affordable clothes, shoes, books and homeware. The money raised helps cover the full cost of running our Sunday free food events. It also allows us to give even more back to the community.
Some things at Lumi Place are always free — including feminine hygiene products, drinking water and toys for children — because we believe everyone should have access to basic essentials.
Today, Lumi Place is more than just food. It is a place where people meet, talk, volunteer and support one another. Everything we do is led by local volunteers and shaped by the needs of our community.
Lumi Place is built on a simple belief: when people come together and care for each other, stronger communities grow.
